Chlorine is a strong oxidant and can attack pipe materials (metals and plastic), causing corrosion problems. More recently (Hassienen 2004, Castagnetti 2010), it has been demonstrated that chlorine is very corrosive even for polyethylene and polypropylene materials, which are widely used in Europe.

Chlorine Dioxide
Currently, it is the most widely used product. It is also corrosive to both metal and plastic pipes, and its high corrosivity has been shown to be the main factor responsible for chlorine dioxide consumption in building water systems.

Monochloramine
Monochloramine, on the other hand, is less aggressive towards pipes as it is a weaker oxidant compared to other chlorine-based disinfectants.

Monochloramine is the best solution

Monochloramine is a well-known and widely used disinfectant for drinking water in the United States and Europe. Being a mild oxidant, its action is less aggressive than that of hypochlorite and chlorine dioxide, and due to its slower action, it is able to penetrate bacterial biofilm more effectively.

This characteristic allows monochloramine to act for long periods without causing any damage to plumbing systems, regardless of the material they are made from, because monochloramine is compatible with both metals and plastics.

The SANIKILL Effect

SANIKILL, the system patented by Sanipur for the production and dosing of monochloramine, is the first and only technology that uses this molecule as a disinfectant for the elimination of Legionella and other waterborne pathogens.

Numerous studies published in prestigious international scientific journals have shown that after just one week of dosing in the water distribution system, the presence of Legionella is reduced below the limits imposed by regulations.

The SANIKILL technology allows for the controlled and safe in situ production of monochloramine from precursors specifically formulated and optimised in our laboratories, diluted, and thus absolutely safe at all stages, from handling to storage. On-demand production ensures that the product is always fresh: the absence of storage systems minimises the presence of disinfection by-products. This ensures the maintenance of perfect hygienic conditions of the water, the absence of unpleasant odours or tastes, and reduced reagent consumption, making SANIKILL an environmentally friendly technology.

Confirming what has been observed in field applications in hundreds of Italian and American hospitals, recent studies conducted by independent entities have demonstrated the ability of monochloramine to minimise corrosion problems. In contrast, chlorine and chlorine dioxide, due to their oxidising power, cause damage to pipes.

Maximum biocidal efficacy, biofilm penetration, high stability, absence of disinfection by-products, and environmental friendliness are just some of the advantages offered by our technology.
